While I'm designing spaces for people to enjoy I'm also thinking about the birds and the bees - sorry not the euphemism, literally the birds in the trees and the insects hiding for cover. It's the ecology of a natural environment, actually any environment whether we like it or not.
It's like the story of the woman who swallowed a fly, I don't know why she swallowed the fly, I guess she'll die. Outside a similar thing is going on all the time where grubs eat plants, other insects eat those grubs, lizards eat the insects and then birds eat the lizards and insects too. Actually its more like a web than a chain of events.
What's important is all of these little life forms, especially the insects, are keeping us alive by pollinating flowers to become fruit and helping decompose leftovers back into soil to grow more food. They're also keeping things fair out there by moderating populations of the critters who gorge themselves on our crops. With a good balance of all the different types of insects, lizards and birds they create a healthy ecology that runs itself without us interfering with chemicals. This type of ecology is far too complex for us humans to fully understand let alone manipulate with full control. It's best just to watch in wonder and make the most of its benefits.
To support an ecology of creatures at your place, all they need is a home with shelter, food and water which is easily provided by the right kind of trees, shrubs and water. Simple.
